Every week we work in the garden with Mr. Gado.  Our first job in the garden was to prepare the beds for planting.  Then we planted corn and pea seeds.  We had to reseed the corn as our first batch did not grow.  Later we learned how to weed around the seedlings.  But, our favorite job is watering the garden.  When we are not working, we dig in the dirt and observe the bugs as they scurry around.

Sat, 08 Jan 2011 05:21:40 -0800 Winter Concert and Calendar Mania http://aisnk1.posterous.com/winter-concert-and-calendar-mania http://aisnk1.posterous.com/winter-concert-and-calendar-mania
December was a busy month with preparations for the annual Winter Concert and calendar art mania.

K/1 joined Pre-K to practice and sing "This Little Light of Mine" for the concert.  Everyone did a stellar job carrying lighted candles and singing to Ms. Debba's guitar accompaniment.  Great work K/1!  We've already started practicing for the International Day concert and hope to put on a lively show.

Our calendars turned out beautifully.  Each student created 12 original pieces of art work for their personal calendar.  We hope you enjoyed the final product.

Wed, 08 Dec 2010 08:21:13 -0800 Week Without Walls http://aisnk1.posterous.com/week-without-walls http://aisnk1.posterous.com/week-without-walls

We watched traditional Wadabi dancers, made fresh bread and butter, and listened to Mr. Sanders folktales.

We saw a mama giraffe and her baby.  Then we had a fascinating tour of the Niger Lait factory.  We had to wear special protective gear for the tour.  After the tour, we sampled Niger Lait products and ate croissants.

We went to Katako Market and learned about the production of aluminum cooking pos.  We watched as the producers made the pot molds in the sand, melted aluminum in a charcoal fired forge, and poured the molten metal into the molds.  Then we loaded the bus and vehicles for a trip out to the Koreygoro Falani village where we had a donkey cart ride and climbed a sand dune before eating lunch under a large Gao tree.

Some students spent the night in the village while others returned to Niamey and participated in a day of tie-dye and batik at the school.

It was a great week.  Thank you, Babacar and family, for the use of your vehicle and driver throughout the week.  Your contribution helped make this a successful adventure.

Mon, 15 Nov 2010 08:45:00 -0800 A Great Trip to the Musee National http://aisnk1.posterous.com/a-great-trip-to-the-musee-national http://aisnk1.posterous.com/a-great-trip-to-the-musee-national

K/1 practiced using some cool vocabulary including: vertebrate, invertebrate, carnivore, herbivore and omnivore.  Students talked with the parrots and they actually said “hello” back to us.  We saw fierce lions fighting over fresh meat.  We watched sleepy warthogs basking in the sun and hungry hyenas pacing in their cages.

The mama hippo was eating hay and waiting for its pool to be cleaned and refilled.  The chimpanzees LOVED the bananas the Jessica brought for them.  The crocodiles looked so peaceful just hanging out in their enclosure.  Check out the Friday folder to read the latest best seller: “I Went to the Musée National and I Saw…”

Educational Websites

Here are some website recommendations for K/1 students to use to practice reading and writing skills, play educational games and explore the world.  I have successfully tested the links.  Hopefully, they will work for you.  Enjoy.

Sun, 07 Nov 2010 12:00:12 -0800 Halloween Celebration http://aisnk1.posterous.com/halloween-celebration http://aisnk1.posterous.com/halloween-celebration We had a great Halloween Parade that started with the Pr-K class and picked up each grade while trick-or-treating along the way.  The finale was in the embassy courtyard.  Upon returning to school, we played multi-age, multi-grade cooperative games.

Our next outings will be our field trip to the Musee and multiple activities during the Week Without Walls.  In the mean time, we continue our study of vertebrates and invertebrates in addition to working towards completion on our world map project.

Sun, 07 Nov 2010 03:26:00 -0800 Getting ready for Halloween http://aisnk1.posterous.com/getting-ready-for-halloween http://aisnk1.posterous.com/getting-ready-for-halloween

The week leading up to the Halloween parade was busy.  K/1 was in charge of counting pumpkin seeds from three large pumpkins.  They separated the seeds into piles of ten to make the counting eaiser.  "Teeny, Tiny" Max from the AISN high school helped with the counting the seeds.  Students painted treat-or-treat bags and jack-o-lanterns as well.
